How the Digital SAT is scored

The test has two sections, each scored from 200 to 800. Reading and Writing is 54 questions in two modules of 27, and Math is 44 questions in two modules of 22. Your right answers in each section become a raw score, which is converted to the 200 to 800 scale. The two sections add up to your total, from 400 to 1600. Wrong answers cost nothing, so never leave a question blank.

Why Module 1 matters

The Digital SAT is adaptive. Do well on Module 1 and Module 2 gets harder, which is the only way to reach the top of the scale. Fall short and Module 2 is easier, but your score for that section tops out around 650. The calculator picks your Module 2 path from your Module 1 score, so a strong first module is worth more than it looks.

What is a good SAT score?

It depends on you. The national average sits a little above 1000, but a good score is the one that gets you where you want to go. Look up the middle 50% range for the colleges on your list and aim for the top half of it. The colors below just mark where a score sits, from under 800 up to 1400 and above.

About the calculator

How the estimate works and how to use it

Enter how many questions you got right in each module. We add the two modules of each section into a raw score, convert it to the 200-800 scale, and add Reading and Writing to Math for your 400-1600 total.
The Digital SAT is adaptive. How you do on Module 1 decides whether Module 2 is the harder or the easier version. The top of the scale is only reachable on the harder path, so on the easier path we cap a section at 650.
It is an estimate. The College Board equates every test form, so the same raw score can be worth 10 to 30 points more or less on a different test date.
It depends on your goals. The national average is a little above 1000. The best target is the middle 50% range of the colleges you are applying to, ideally the top half of it.
Reading and Writing has 54 questions in two 27-question modules (32 minutes each). Math has 44 questions in two 22-question modules (35 minutes each).
