How the AP Human Geography exam is scored
The exam is 2 hours and 15 minutes long. Multiple choice (60 questions) is 50% of your score and free response is 50%. The free response has three questions worth 7 points each. Each part is scaled by its weight and added into a composite out of 100, which is then converted to a score from 1 to 5.
What does it take to get a 5?
About 70 of 100 composite points, by our estimate. One way to get there is roughly 42 of 60 multiple choice questions right and 15 of 21 free-response points. A 4 takes about 59 points and a 3 about 49. In 2026, 19% of students earned a 5 and 66% earned a 3 or higher.
Where students lose points
Each free response is worth 7 points and is graded on its task verb. "Identify" wants a word or phrase. "Explain" wants a cause and its effect. Students lose points writing a paragraph of description when the question asks for an explanation. Scale (local, regional, global) comes up all over the multiple choice, so check which one a question is asking about.
